Resonant spin–flavour precession of neutrinos and pulsar velocities

چکیده

Young pulsars are known to exhibit large space velocities, up to 10 km/s. We propose a new mechanism for the generation of these large velocities based on an asymmetric emission of neutrinos during the supernova explosion. The mechanism involves the resonant spin–flavour precession of neutrinos with a transition magnetic moment in the magnetic field of the supernova. The asymmetric emission of neutrinos is due to the distortion of the resonance surface by matter polarisation effects in the supernova magnetic field. The requisite values of the field strengths and neutrino parameters are estimated for various neutrino conversions caused by their Dirac or Majorana–type transition magnetic moments. Pulsar acceleration by asymmetric emission of sterile neutrinos

A convincing explanation for the observed pulsar large peculiar velocities is still missing. We argue that any viable particle physics solution would most likely involve the resonant production of a non-interacting neutrino νs of mass mνs ∼ 20–50 keV. We propose a model where anisotropic magnetic field configurations strongly bias the resonant spin flavour precession of tau antineutrinos into ν...

Tau neutrinos from active galactic nuclei

We study the appearance of ντ from active galactic nuclei (AGN) through neutrino spin-flip. We consider two situations: i) Spin (flavour)-precession in a reasonable strength of magnetic field in AGN, BAGN ii) Adiabatically resonant conversions caused by an interplay of BAGN and the violation of equivalence principle. Observational consequences for both situations are discussed.

A non-resonant dark-side solution to the solar neutrino problem

We re-analyse spin-flavour precession solutions to the solar neutrino problem in the light of the recent SNO CC result as well as the 1258–day Super-Kamiokande data and the upper limit on solar anti-neutrinos. In a self-consistent magnetohydrodynamics approach the resulting scheme has only 3 effective parameters: ∆m, μB⊥ and the neutrino mixing angle θ. We show how a rates-only analysis for fix...

Pulsar Velocities without Neutrino Mass

One of the most challenging problems in modern astrophysics is to find a consistent explanation for the high velocity of pulsars. Observations [1] show that these velocities range from zero up to 900 km/s with a mean value of 450 ± 50 km/s . An attractive possibility is that pulsar motion arises from an asymmetric neutrino emission during the supernova (SN) explosion. In fact, neutrinos carry m...

Towards a Model Independent Treatment of Future Solar Neutrino Data

Possibilities of a model independent treatment of the data from future real-time solar neutrino experiments (SNO, Super-Kamiokande and others) are discussed. It is shown that in the general case of transitions of the initial solar νe’s into νμ and/or ντ the total flux of initial B neutrinos and the νe survival probability can be determined directly from the experimental data. Relations between ...
